The Secret Ballot Is The True Test Of Democracy
Democracy has numerous positive virtues that so many others have bandied around for a very long time.
The path chosen to democracy is what differentiates a peaceful/progressive nation from a developing/primitive society.
IMHO, the secret ballot is the ultimate democratic voting scheme. A man or woman with a ballot paper inside a secluded polling booth, with his or her conscience as the only witnesses to the proceedings of the personal decision making deed.
Looking at the US 2008 presidential race, it is obvious that certain people are more likely to vote according to their true convictions when the ballot casting is secret.
Expectedly, the trend is that Obama seems to have the upper hand in states with caucuses, where voting is by a show of hands; while Hillary should win in states with primaries, where the secret ballot is preferred!
I think that people tend to be less hypocritical when left alone to make their own decisions - as in a secret balloting environment, where a person can express any opinion before walking into the private booth but do what is right for himself and his/her constituency once alone inside.
A caucus meeting forces people to be influenced unduly in order to maintain membership of a peer group or to literally be untrue to one's self, while pleasing others - sometimes, those with a hidden agenda.
