In your face crudely, slam dunked Somali pirates
Those pesky Somali pirates! The ease with which they grab at anything that moves around the Horn of Africa is quite brazen, not to say getting a bit alarming.
From an armed cache aboard a ship, and negotiating terms while surrounded by an international fleet of frigates and warships, the now-legendary but still nameless Somali pirates have taken their piracy up one notch.
They have just captured a Saudi Arabian oil supertanker with a crude oil cargo worth an estimated $100 million.
With a size equivalent to three aircraft carriers, that supertanker must have stuck out like a sore thum on the high seas, a slow moving target attractive enough for the speed-boat cruising thieves to go for.
What beats me, once more, after the arms and tankers seizures a few months ago, is why such a huge cargo ship was not escorted.
I mean, here is an excerpt from the article linked above to show the magnitude of the situation: "....The Sirius Star held a cargo of as much as two million barrels of oil -- more than one quarter of Saudi Arabia's daily production....."
Is that not like a cash laden bullion van blasting away with its sirens and having no police escort for protection?
For crying out loud, how much would an escort vessel have cost? Or were there no takers because of the fear of the Somali pirates?
