All hail the new UN security members
Yes, their tenure is for two years only but that is still quite a powerful position to be found in. I know Nigeria badly wanted to be elected mainly for prestige reasons.
However, the Giant of Africa was knocked off balance by Uganda, which won the single seat reserved for Africa.
Mexico won for the Americas while Turkey and Austria both won the non-permanent Security Council seats for the Europe zone.
Japan, which won for the Asian continent, rounded off the latest list of five new entrants into the world's security dispatchers, able to both effect sanctions and deploy peacekeeping forces.
I guess Iran wanted to use the veto power attached to the security council membership to influence decisions not directly favoring it.
However, competing against Japan was definitely an exercise in futility as Iran was trounced 158 to just 32 in the secret ballot of the United Nations General Assembly elections held on Friday.
