Mars has water and other lollies
Deserts have oasis and other habitats, too. Sorry, I did not mean to be so cynical about the recent NASA announcement about water being detected on the planet Mars by the Mars Odyssey unmanned spacecraft.
The following are some of the relevant Martian news stories: NASA: Water Found On Mars, BBC News: Water 'found on Mars', CBS News: Water Found On Mars, Phoenix Spacecraft Finds Ice In Soil, Melts ..., Evidence of Water Found on Mars: Astrobiology Magazine, FOXNews: Huge Reservoir of Frozen Water Found on Mars ..., and Astronomy Magazine: Water found on Mars.
The only question now is how important that fact is, other than leading someone to ask about how hot or potable the surface water over there is.
I mean Mars is the relatively hotter than Earth in the order of the planets in our solar system because of its nearness to the sun.
I remember a mnemonic device I used in High School Geography class to remember the order of closeness of the then-nine planets to the sun - until Pluto was demotedas a planet or 'plutoed' into the English lexicon a year or two ago.
It was :My Very Eyes May Just See Under Nine Planets for Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto.
So, really, no surprises there...I think I also recall an old song with lyrics that sounded like, "Mars has women..."
