How do wars start in Africa, Dad?
A child in the developed world may ask that question very innocently but would certainly be surprised to hear the answer, "They are started by your love of video games, son!"
As ridiculous as that may sound, it appears to be true. Just as true as the generally well known fact that oil politics started the Iraqi versus Western Allies war.
I certainly was surprised by the fact that the production of electronics spare parts and components in one part could lead to war in another part of the world.
However, I learned today that tantalum is produced from the rare ore called coltan, which is actively mined in Africa, especially in Rwanda and Congo using child laborers.
I have never heard that before till now. I had always thought that those wars and the atrocities committed in those countries in wartime were politically rooted.
I guess too, now in hind sight, diamonds caused the wars in Sierra Leone and Liberia? I think I recall that the powerful remake of the song "Diamonds are forever" by Kanye West was actually a reiteration of that point.
