Seismic exploration gets supercomputing power from gaming
The Oil Industry is poised to discover more oil reservoirs in the near future. The IBM Cell Chip, which uses 9 parallel processing cores to do data intensive calculations, is just the boost the industry needed.
The chip, originally meant for video game processing, may be joined soon by a newer version with up to 34 processing cores! It certainly qualifies as a crossover product - from Sony's PlayStation3 to Oil wells.
Other attributes of the IBM Cell Broadband Engine include low power consumption and 'high-impact seismic capability'.
Other possible applications of the Cell chip include cryptography, matrix operations, DNA map processing, and so on.
